the motion involved both in the making and consumption of pornography effects different people in a myriad of ways. the actors and actresses have what many would consider the strange career of being filmed having sex. some would say that the simple act of being filmed having sex then receiving money for it is an act of prostitution. others can speculate that the imagery of contemporary pornography has a detrimental effect on its predominantly male viewers. third wave feminism leaves both the act of creation and consumption up to the decision of each individual involved. musicians make careers employing its imagery while social groups make careers condemning it. kids on the street have it on in the background at a party. tired marriages try to use it to spice thing up.
i cant tell you what it is. i cant tell you what its not.

Steal This Film II

http://www.stealthisfilm.com/Part2/index.php

as much as i would love others to not just straight up steal the shit out of my work, i have a very different opinion when it comes to the media industry.

you can watch this film, learn something or some things. regardless your opinion on the sharing of information and media, this film opens eyes to what file sharing is, what its supposed to be, and how its is for sure changing the world.

with Russia quickly returning to the potential title of the only "other" super-power wielding government in the world, the US attempts to make what is known as a potential threat and turns it into a known threat. with the cold war not even cold from death, and a world wide rise in Democratic governing styles, we as citizens, are being fed Nationalistic baby food in hopes of more conflict in countries literally on the other side of the globe.
my long time girlfriend is also finishing her Graduate Degree in Sociology. upon completion of her final thesis, she must submit it for review by a board of educators. if they have any suggestions or problems with the thesis (which is required) she must offer a Formal Defense of her work.
a graduate student in the liberal arts, for the most part, will choose a thesis on something they care for deeply, or at least find very interesting. in this same way, the US is trying to convince its citizens that other nations will have problems with what its self interests are, namely; money, power, and control.
the slightly cartooned image of an eagle head (the national bird) paired with the poetic wings of another unnamed fowl create a creature that is both slim-lined for flight as it is for appearing to be able to fly.
in the occurrence of all out war, no superficial saber rattling or masks of absolute power can protect either side from the inevitable loss of civilian life, corruption of culture, or identity as a Nation. much in the same way, having to defend a thesis an individual has spent months writing will do little to change their mind on the content or context in which it was written.

the goods

the goods.
ink on paper.
19 x 12 1/2".
2008.
a slightly more calculated mini-series created as a spin-off from Saturday_Night_Wrist. much in the same way a television spin-off takes a viewer's favorite walk-on character from another show to elaborate on more idiosyncratic hi-jinks, this series concentrates on controlled arm motion and anti-gesture.

the process entails a sheet pinned vertically getting "spit on" by a brush loaded with ink. the spitting comes from gestural arm motions reacting to music or literature. slight arcs pop up and are the only recognizable shapes before the next step.
in preparation for this series, three sheets are pinned up on the work wall in order to, in some instances, overlap the initial spit marks from the beginning of the process. from these three sheets, i work in no particular order in a mind-melting game of "don't connect but connect the dots." i create connections (or rather, fight my eye and muscle reactions) to where the next line begins or ends. the excessive dripping is created either by stopping for a moment to create discourse in the line being made or the decision to find the fastest way out.

the difference between the Goods and SNW is simply more concern with the initial spit and line weight rather than amassing marks.

the soundtrack: MSTRKRFT-the looks, Jawbox-S/T, Unwound-leaves turn inside you, Colossamite-the economy of motion, and random Thelonious Monk.

crankin' 'em out

i went to my old employer, United Art & Education, to pick up two #4 United nylon brushes and a quart of good old speedball black ink. a few bucks later and i am off.

so time in the studio has given birth to many a new, small pieces. a lot. really, a lot. unless Meko offers me a one man show with everything hung salon style, ive gotta get rid of this stuff. ive been thinking of selling them cheap ($30) with a few extras; hand written note, a sticker, and a select few would get a business card sized mix cd of mp3s.

how do i get the word out? reposting this on myspace.com/iamsick, posting it here, and whoring myself to the local crowd that thinks im an a-hole. well, im off to that too.

more later.

new, smaller series and questions of workers intent.

the last few days ive been looking for part-time stuff like crazy, but that didnt keep me from making a small table for a stereo in the studio. from that construction ive started a new series of the ink drips on smaller sheets of 100# productolith paper. the paper has the shine of commercial stock which plays well with the matte black of the ink.

at the start of the "saturday night" series it was more about gestures and control of not thinking. as things have progressed, my focus turns back to the figure. i am not so much choosing to define figurative shapes as i am using the same mark-making choices ive used in the past. there is still a struggle in the line (that i hope to god comes through in the piece) and maybe that has more to do with my concern about my tools than it does my execution.

with the addition of a proper stereo to the space, the wall on which i work has shrunken, as well as the ceiling. another tool i am unsure of. and playing mix tapes from the late 90's only makes my heart do a slow burn.

my primary brush is a nylon W&N #2. made for acrylics, it serves as a  fantastic ink-giver when loaded up. but my abuse/use of this one brush is taking its toll. i  whip the thing around for effects, then try to tame my own nervous energy when the sweeter, thoughtless application begins. as much as i would love a handful of bamboo brushes with the best of horse tail, dripping with some Suni as black as Russian coal, i must go with the cheap alternative of whats in the bucket.

i need more ink. i need more brushes. i want to try this on heavier paper. huge paper is out of the question right now. too ambitious right now. im comfortable with the size right now. these things are accessible, frame ready, would look fantastic pasted on mailboxes or on doors of abandoned buildings (the second Liberty series is both rejecting and embracing street art, but more on those when theyre more done.)
i dont think just going big for the sake of scale is worth it. i need a bigger wall, anyway.

oh - primaries. how i wish it mattered. one new 25x38 piece is called "a mountain of delegates." im pretty happy my girlfriend listens to the rules and speculation and BS going on. american politics is the dirtiest, most catty-wompass, out-dated system in the world. thank god for cable? thank god for piles of paper.
